Tommy Wright says knowing his new assistant well was crucial after Ashton was announced as joined the club, writes Tom Feaheny.
The 34 year-old who is from the area, joins as both helping with the coaching side of the team and also signs as a defender.
The ex Leicester City, Notts County and Stevenage centre-back last season played for Braintree Town and then Grays Athletic on loan.
Wright who has known Ashton since the pair were at Leicester City, told the club's website, of why Ashton is such a key appointment for Nuneaton Town.
“It was important that I brought the right person into this role; Jon is someone whom I know I will have a good working relationship with straight away. He ticks a lot of boxes in regards to what we are trying to achieve here and I can’t wait to start working with him.
“He will bring a lot of qualities to us both on and off-the-field. He is a winner and the young lads here will learn a lot from his experience and desire.
He added: “With all the pre-season work now done, Jon will be able to take a back seat and learn about the players and what makes them tick. He is going to be a leader and a positive and experienced voice in the dressing room.
Ashton replaces Steve Chettle who left his role to take over at Midland League Division One newcomers Ilkeston Town.
