Wrexham And Notts Fans Getting A Little Look At The Future

By Sam Elliott

The third oldest professional football club in the world welcome the eldest of them all, but hold the history for a moment.

They have both been getting a vision of the future lately, and they like what they see.

While Wrexham’s story has gone global, Notts County are starting to look like they mean business.

You couldn’t have missed the Dragons’ Hollywood takeover being rubber stamped minutes after Tuesday’s encouraging win at Altrincham.

It’s also been hard to avoid Michael Doyle’s heroics - the Notts midfielder rebranded Schmeichel Doyle after grabbing the gloves as the ten men beat Dagenham 3-1 in midweek.

Wrexham, with the support of those A-listers, want to get the ball rolling on their project this year - before Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney get their feet under the Racecourse table.

Dean Keates may not say it, but he'll know their arrival brings added expectation.

How he needed Tuesday’s impressive 2-1 win. It was their fifth away win so far, and progress is proved by the fact that they now have more victories on the road than they did in the entire 2019-20 campaign.

The next mission is to impress in front of the BT Sport cameras on Saturday teatime.

“The club are in a great position going forward and the future looks great,” Keates said.

"It is great for the publicity of the football club; it has always been known for FA Cup shocks, established league teams, it has had good European days previously.

“Now it is writing another chapter in its history as well."

It has at times been a little underwhelming, but what do they say about always just staying in the game?

The manager told the Daily Post that it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.

Wrexham have now shoehorned themselves into the top seven. The focus has fallen on them, so could the Hollywood lightbulbs capture a script-worthy finish?

“Early on Tuesday didn't make a pass and we were kind of a little bit rushed so we turned it over too many times and it went back to them.

"But we grew into it, we got down the sides of them a few times and scored a good goal.

“We showed character. We showed resilience. We kept going and rightly so we got the second and won the match.”

Notts County fans have not witnessed four straight wins for quite some time.

Victories over Dagenham, Weymouth and Solihull Moors - paired with a mid-season wobble for leaders Torquay United - had left those supporters watching at home wondering what if.

Manager Neal Ardley can see things are coming together.

He told the Nottingham Post his team are enjoying a good moment and success in north Wales would get people really talking.

But following Tuesday’s eventful 3-1 win over the Daggers, he said he feels his team are maybe even proving him wrong.

“To a man I was proud of them, absolutely,” he told the press. “I'm just gutted they conceded a goal because they didn't deserve to

“I can't really speak highly enough of the players. They're in a great place. The fitness levels are great. They're buzzing. They're desperate to play games, all of them. And long may it continue.

“When we first went into lockdown, we were really in a good place then and it feels that way again. I see it every day. It's a manager's job to feel when things are good and when they're not.

“We've had times this season where it's been a bit bitty and I wasn't sure in training that we were quite where we needed to be - in terms of the mentality of the group and the cohesiveness.

“But it feels like it's in a really good place now and everybody is desperate to be on that pitch. And everybody knows what they've got to do if they get on that pitch too.”
