Williamson Wants Even More From His Free Scoring Heed

Mike Williamson watched his Gateshead side put away another four goals on Saturday to secure back-to-back wins and then told his players: I want more from you.

A fierce second half saw the Heed score their eighth goal in two games as they dismantled Ebbsfleet United after turning on the style at Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday night.

He reserved praise for hat-trick hero Stephen Wearne, the Fleet’s chief tormentor after opening his account in East London days before.

Williamson, 39, isn’t hard to please but just knows how good his team can be after putting a frustrating first two results against Hartlepool United and Boreham Wood to one side.

“The message is always improve, you always want more - that’s the nature of it and the players know that,” he said after Saturday’s straight-forward 4-1 win.

“They need to have the understanding of how good we can be, because the first half was really good in all respects except the scorerine, it’s a demonstration of how good we can be.

“My assessment of our start is that I’m disappointed with the points tally but we know the levels we can get to. We’re showing the qualities we have.”

He told the club’s official channels that he pulled striker Wearne aside before the game and told him to cut out the integrity.

“Ever since he’s come in he’s been fantastic,” the former Newcastle United defender said. “His enthusiasm and honesty have been there for all to see since he first arrived.

“I had a conversation with him about him being too honest, using unnecessary energy. We want to conserve that, he empties the tank every moment he can.

“He got his reward in the second half. I felt we were on the backfoot with our pressing and anticipating in the first half. There was a little bit holding us back and the frustration was there. But we could have had more goals in the end, the lads were superb.”
