Wilkinson Sets Out Stones’ Second Leg Battle Plan

Wealdstone manager Bobby Wilkinson accepts his team probably need to score the first goal against Brackley next weekend.

The FA Trophy semi-final is finely poised as Kevin Wilkin’s side take a 1-0 lead to to north west London.

The Saints know that perhaps the lead should have been greater after missing a number of chances in Northants.

But Wilkinson is well aware that if Brackley score first in the second leg then they will face a huge uphill struggle.

“We always knew we had to stay in the game and keep the tie alive,” said the Stones manager following the first match at St James Park.

“We certainly did that. We kept it at 1-0 and didn’t go chasing - it was about making sure we have a chance this Saturday and we do.

“We need to score the first goal next weekend. We need to be on the front foot and if we do that we will see what happens.

“We showed a lot of determination and we worked our socks off. We knew how difficult it would be and so it proved.

“But we’re very much still in the tie. We won’t be the favourites but this is cup football.”

Wilkinson knows one thing could be in Wealdstone’s favour at Grosvenor Vale.

“The supporters have a huge part to play in the second leg of this tie, huge,” he said.

“Because if they turn up for us and pack the place out it could give us that extra ten per cent.

“We’re still very much in it. Our fans will know that and we need as many through the gate as possible.”
