The Minstermen got back to winning ways as they narrowly overcame Southport 1-0 but their manager wasn’t happy with the team’s tempo.
The pressure is off York with safety assured and the club unlikely to put a run together to threaten the top seven.
Watson says they missed the chance to impress their fans after taking their foot off the gas after half-time.
“We have to play better than that - that’s not the way I want to play,” he demanded.
“I said to the players that today could be the day that we put in a really strong and solid performance, but overall we didn’t.
“Of course after three straight draws it was nice to win, it was great to get three points on the board as we need that.
“I’m delighted with a lot of aspects of it, especially the clean sheet.
“It’s just the way we played in the second half which I was really disappointed with
“We didn’t have the confidence to play and pass the ball like we should have and I can’t understand why.”
