Each player is different of course, but a little bit of love for your club goes a long way.
Ebbsfleet United goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore has never struck anyone as a player who doesn’t play for the shirt.
Ahead of tomorrow’s live BT Sport tea time fixture with Gateshead, he has proved that once and for all.
“I hope our first home game in September is a little more relaxed than our first game in August,” he told us.
“The night before the Chesterfield game, Sam’s waters broke. Our daughter started coming at 2.15am - I was there, that is all that matters.
“I played the next day then drove straight back. My mobile phone was on the bench and I didn’t miss the birth.
“Naevia Monroe Ashmore arrived on the Sunday. She’s a little beauty. She was born just over a month ago now.
“Let’s just say it’s a new experience with then nights but well worth it. Of course, she’s been to three games - not just that, she has got her very own Ashmore shirt already!”
If Naevia stays at home to watch in the comfort of the living room on Saturday remains to be seen.
But after Fleet dropped points at Dover on Tuesday and at home to AFC Fylde last Saturday, daddy needs to get down to work this weekend.
“It’s been a good start from us, a bit disappointed in the last two games but we’re three points better from last season,” he said.
“We can only build on it. It is going to be a tough game on Saturday, Gateshead have the same points as us but we’re looking for the win to carry this start on.”
