Who'll Say Goodbye To October With A Show-Stopper?

By Sam Elliott

Who’s going to get the timing just right a few hours before the clocks go back?

When the nights draw in you know things are starting to get serious and ending October on a high before the FA Cup break is all-important.

Especially when it’s a live game - and especially when one club is in trouble down the bottom and the other’s four-game winning run has thrust them back into the promotion places.

In-form FC Halifax Town go to York City who have lost their way a little in recent weeks and now sit just one place and one point above the danger zone. Matt Smith and the TNT Sports team know there’s a lot at stake and their always excellent coverage begins at 5pm.

Leaders Chesterfield already have an incredible 41 points on the board and left green-eyed York boss Neal Ardley desperate for his team to play with the same style and determination.

They’ll be heading half-way to 100 points well before Christmas at this rate and if they win at Kidderminster Harriers they will feel a gap may soon start to appear.

It’s credit to Barnet that so far that hasn’t happened. The Bees are at Oxford City, who have won one of their last nine.

If Bromley were as great away as they are a home they would be sitting top. They head to Woking this weekend but there will be extra spice to this one after the Ravens turned the Surrey side over in the play-offs in May.

Solihull Moors could have closed the gap at Barnet in midweek but succumbed to a 97th minute leveller - they will want to get back to winning ways at home to Wealdstone, who have yet to taste victory on the road.

Southend United would be sitting in sixth if it wasn’t for their points deduction - they can climb back towards the top seven if they leave Boreham Wood with three points.

Maidenhead United are perhaps facing the toughest test of their National League life after slipping to the bottom of the division in midweek. Alan Devonshire knows the importance of a good afternoon at home to Eastleigh.

Will Altrincham get payback for Oldham’s FA Cup win two weeks ago? The teams meet again at Boundary Park.

Hartlepool United need to address their worrying form as quickly as possible if they want to remain in the promotion picture. After three points from a possible 18, Pools welcome Rochdale, who themselves haven’t won in six.

Ebbsfleet United have to get things together as well, they are at home to a Dagenham & Redbridge side also just above the drop zone.

Tommy Widdrington says there’s even more to come from his Aldershot Town team even after three straight wins. His on-song team are at Dorking Wanderers, while AFC Fylde play Gateshead.
