Whites' Spirit Key Behind Play-Off Push Says Kinnear

Chris Kinnear reckons his Dover Athletic side’s spirit is shining through in the National League play-off race.

The Whites needed a late Ade Azeez goal to see off Gateshead 3-2 at Crabble on Saturday - a result which saw them leapfrog Kent rivals Ebbsfleet into seventh.

Dover had to fight back from a goal down and then responded to Dan Johnson’s late leveller to take all three points, much to boss Kinnear’s delight.

“The goals we conceded were disappointing but that’s part of learning and we still have the second-best defence in the league.,” he told Kent Online.

“We were the best side. Their first goal was ridiculous, their left-back has just caught it so sweetly and it hit the post and went in.

“It just shows you the spirit of the lads, they didn’t get too down when they went behind.”

Kinnear reserved special praise for loan forward Azeez, who picked the perfect time to net his first goal in 11 appearances.

“He looked the part and came on and put them under pressure,” Kinnear added. “A lot of people wouldn’t have gone near the goal and turned away but he followed up and it made a lot of people very happy.”
