Wheeler Learned ‘Too Much’ From Stones First Game

Harry Wheeler says his first match in charge of Maidstone United was the eye-opener he didn’t really want.

The Stones new boss saw for himself the size of the challenge ahead of him on Saturday.

A 2-0 home defeat to Harrogate Town, the leaders of the National League, doesn’t look too damaging on paper.

But Wheeler wasn’t about to hide behind the fact his team were facing the in-form and undefeated table toppers.

He said: “It was a difficult first game, a very difficult first game.

“Perhaps I learned a little bit more than I wanted to in some ways! There is a lot of work ahead of us.

“We are already quite a way into the new season, a quarter of the way, and already we know we haven’t got a lot of time to get to the team heading in the right direction.

“But there are still a hell of a lot of points to play for. We will get better.”

Wheeler knows the pressure is on to go to Braintree and get a result this weekend.

The Iron won for the first time on Saturday and they will leapfrog the Stones in the table if they do to them what they did to Gateshead.

“We have some big games coming up, they are all big games when you are where we are,” Wheeler said.

“We need to make sure there’s some improvements but I feel the side will turn the corner.”
