What Will It Take To See The Hawks Do The Unthinkable?

Whitehawk could need eight more National League South wins to complete the greatest of escapes, fears manager Steve King.

The Hawks did win a game until the start of 2018 but they have been fantastic so far this year.

So much so that King was disappointed to only claim a point from their trip to second place Hampton on Saturday.

The former Lewes, Northwich and Macclesfield Town manager has given the team a fighting chance - but he knows survival may still be a long shot.

He told the National League’s Oli Osborn: “It was a little hard to take not winning the game because the goal Hampton scored was not a good goal.

“The cross has come in, the keeper has caught it and has then fallen into the net with the ball.

“It was a fair result if I am being honest, but it’s just the way we conceded the goal.”

It’s a very different Whitehawk we’re watching in more ways than one.

“We’re not the side who started the season - we’ve only just put this team together over the last seven or eight weeks really,” King added. “The results are really showing that.

“We’ve got new players, better players and players who all know the level. I always knew it would take ten games of being here to assess and address what we needed to do.

“We have really pushed on since Christmas. We now have a group who can not only compete, but win games.

“I think we need eight wins to stay up, if I am being honest that’s going to be very difficult.

“With 13 games left that is a tough, tough ask. But we have come to Hampton who are second and to get a point and nearly win shows how far we have come.”

Next up up is a trip to Bath City and King said: “We now know we need to go and try to win every game, we can’t say draws are good results anymore! It will be like that at Bath next weekend, they are a side like us. The manager has come in and got his own little side together and they are in their own bit of form.

“I have been there many times and I know it’s a really difficult place to get three points at.”
