What Happened On Saturday And What's Ahead Tomorrow

By Sam Elliott

Part one of the latest batch of end of year fixtures produced plenty of talking points - and Monday’s are sure to have even more.

The last games of 2023 took place on Saturday and leaders Chesterfield’s advantage was cut to four points.

That’s because Bromley were brilliant as they swept Ebbsfleet United aside 5-1. The strugglers wet ahead but roared on by over 4,000 fans, the hosts turned it around - Michael Cheek scored before Ben Krauhaus got the first of his two goals. Alex Kirk and Olufela Olomola also hit the net.

Barnet are also finding some form again, Adebola Oluwo got the goal to defeat Southend United as Laurie Walker starred between the posts. Josh Stones continues to thrill Oldham Athletic fans, another goal ended John Askey’s time at Hartlepool United.

Lee Ndlovu’s brace added to Kidderminster’s woes as Boreham Wood fired themselves up to 14th place.

In the National League on New Year’s Day we’ve got some great games in store - and of course a live TNT Sports match.

Not many sides have stopped Chesterfield in their tracks this year, and even fewer have stopped the leaders scoring! Solihull Moors did just that on Boxing Day, and they’re going to try and do it all again and the team will be in place for the 3pm kick off.

One game that didn’t catch light was Aldershot’s derby with Woking. Will there by fireworks in t by repeat?

There’s a big game down the bottom too as Oxford City and Dorking - the teams either side of the drop zone - meanwhile Rochdale try to grab a play-off place by winning at AFC Fylde.

Altrincham and FC Halifax hope to hang on to theirs - they meet again and both sides have claimed 39 points so far. York City welcome Gateshead, Eastleigh want to set the record straight when Dagenham visit and Maidenhead are at Wealdstone, who have had a great year.

Back to Saturday’s action and the intense National League North title race continues as both both Scunthorpe United and Tamworth won away from home to keep as as you were at the top at the end of the year.

Managerless South Shields and Darlington were both defeated to Blyth Spartants, who had a chaotic week themselves, and Scarborough Athletic respectively.

There’s action on Monday too. Boston United and King’s Lynn Town are gearing up with both teams’ focus on different ends of the table. Chester are at Warrington as Southport have a revenge mission in mind when they tackle Curzon Ashton.

There were just two games in the National League South on Saturday - Aveley left it late to defeat Dover Athletic, Manny Ogunrinde with a 90th minute winner and Welling also needed one, an own goal, to take a point home from Dartford.

On New Year’s Day, Hampton & RB look to kick off 2024 as they ended the last year… undefeated! They’re at Slough Town, while Bath City and Chippenham is sure to draw a big crowd. There’s always needle when Hemel Hempstead and St Albans City play while Maidstone United gear up for the FA Cup third round with a testing game against Tonbridge Angels.
