What Happened On New Year's Day In The National League?

By Sam Elliott

It was a good New Year’s Day for the sides at the top of the National League as all the title chasers won.

Leaders Barrow knew a victory was important after two draws and they did enough to escape AFC Fylde with all three points.

They stay top after Scott Quigley fired in the winner six minutes into the second half to maintain the Bluebirds’ one-point advantage. Ian Evatt’s team have two games in hand on the others as 2020 started with a 1-0 win.

Yeovil recovered from the big early blow of having experienced Chris Dagnall sent off to win at Torquay.

The Glovers made a statement with a gutsy 2-0 success at Plainmoor, playing a man short for 78 minutes. In form front two Courtney Duffus and Rhys Murphy sealed the win.

Bromley are back in the groove, a 3-0 win over Dover was nailed with second-half Josh Rees and Michael Cheek goals.

Harrogate keep the pressure on as veteran Jon Stead did real damage at Hartlepool United.

His winner means Simon Weaver’s men are just three points off Barrow thanks to their 1-0 Victoria Park win.

Sutton United secured the result of the day - their form is red hot right now, and they swept Woking aside 6-2.

Midfielder Harry Beautyman’s season tally now stands at 12 after his double. Ben Goodliffe, David Ajiboye, Tommy Wright and Craig Dundas completed the rout. Sutton who were 5-0 at half-time, have now won four on the bounce.

Notts County couldn’t make it four from four themselves but their point at Maidenhead may prove useful - 0-0 it ended in Berkshire.

Solihull Moors knew the gap to the leaders was growing and couldn’t afford to not take three points at home to Chesterfield.

The Spireites remain in real bother at the bottom as Tim Flowers’ team ran out comfortable 3-0 winners. Jake Beesley scored twice and Paul McCallum grabbed the other as Moors returned to winning ways.

There were two huge games at the wrong end of the table.

Only Wrexham’s second away win of the season pulled them out of the bottom four, 2-0 winners at Chorley with the win sealed by Omari Patrick.

The other ended all square, managerless Dagenham pegging back Ebbsfleet. Will Wright’s free-kick made it 1-1 five minutes from time.

Ethan Chislett was at the double as Aldershot gave themselves a big survival boost, winning the all-Hampshire affair with Eastleigh 3-1.

There was no way through in the two other National League matches.

Boreham Wood and Barnet ended goalless, as did usually free-scoring Stockport County and their game at FC Halifax.
