What Happened On Boxing Day In The National League?

By Sam Elliott

Boxing Day didn’t disappoint with derby delight for some with late goals, big scorelines and thrillers to be found elsewhere.

Stockport County were one of the sides to hand out a real Christmas stuffing, pictured.

They hit Altrincham for five - goals from Antoni Sarcevic, Paddy Madden, Scott Quigley, Will Collar and Oliver Crankshaw all hit the mark in front of a huge crowd of almost 9,000.

Torquay United continue to haunt Yeovil Town whenever they play at Plainmoor.

It wasn’t quite as emphatic as last year’s 6-1 success but a second half super show thrilled the home fans as Ben Wynter, Jack Sparkes and Joe Lewis all grabbed goals in the 3-0 win.

There was late penalty drama as Aldershot and Woking had to settle for a point apiece.

Corie Andrews’ spot kick almost won in for the ten man Shots but in stoppage time Max Kretzschmar made it 1-1.

Bromley missed the chance to go top after Southend United bit back.

A win would have taken them to the summit in the live BT Sport game but Matthew Dennis levelled moment after Michael Cheek had put the Ravens in front.

Matt Robinson’s double earned Dagenham a simple win at Dover Athletic.

There are new National League South leaders - but that wasn’t the story of the day.

Dorking Wanderers hit Havant & Waterlooville for eight as the ten men were swept aside with ease. In-form Alfie Rutherford got a hat-trick against his old club.

Oxford City are back on top thanks to their 3-2 win over Slough Town, the vital goal scored by George Harmon.

Maidstone United keep the pressure on, a 1-0 win at Tonbridge Angels was earned by Michael Phillips’ goal.

Bath City earned a derby victory over Chippenham in some style - a 4-1 win over their old foes.

Elsewhere, Chelmsford City beat rivals Braintree 3-0, as Concord Rangers won the other Essex battle, going to Billericay and getting a 3-1 win.

In the National League North, Chorley became the first side to leave AFC Fylde with three points for many months.

Scott Leather and Oliver Shenton’s first half goals claimed a huge three points for the Magpies.

Steve Watson got off to a great start as Chester manager.

A 3-1 win added to bottom club AFC Telford United’s problems, Darren Stephenson wrapped things up.

Glen Taylor’s penalty earned a point for Spennymoor after Luke Charman had put Darlington ahead in the all-North East clash.

Both Curzon Ashton and Southport and Gloucester City and Leamington fired blanks.
