What Happened In Tuesday Night's Friendly Matches?

By Sam Elliott

With the season just over two weeks from starting, our teams’ pre-season preparations are well underway – it’s time to review another busy night of friendly action, writes Tom Scott.

FC United of Manchester have high hopes for the new season, but they slipped to a 2-0 home defeat against Oldham.

Player-manager Tom Greaves was happy with his players, especially goalkeeper Lloyd Allinson who superbly saved a Latics penalty.

Bromley secured a memorable victory against Premier League Crystal Palace at home – Neil Smith’s side winning 1-0.

Smith said goalscorer Kyle De Silva has staked his claim for a starting berth on August 4 by coming on and bagging the only goal of the game for the Ravens.

De Silva came off the bench to score against his former employers – giving Bromley a well-deserved victory.

John Still is getting his Barnet side firing – the Bees won 7-1 away at Maldon & Tiptree – opening the scoring after just three minutes, thanks to Ephron Mason-Clark’s goal.

A brace from a trialist put the visitors three up – before Jack Barham made it four at half-time. More of the same in the second-half but not before the hosts registered a goal just after the break.

An own goal on 66 minutes saw Barnet further extend their lead – with a Wes Fonguck brace finishing the rout late on.

Oxford City secured a fine win against League Two Luton Town – the home side running out 3-0 winners at Marsh Lane.

New signings Ben Jefford and Kabongo Tshimanga got a goal either side of half-time – with a Luton own goal completing the scoring for Justin Merritt’s men.

Harrogate slipped behind early on to Brighouse Town when the visitors took the lead inside the first ten minutes.

It wasn’t until the 40th minute when new signing Aaron Williams bagged two goals in as many minutes – to put Town in front at half-time. Dominic Knowles scored Harrogate’s third - to wrap up a 3-1 victory - seven minutes from time.

FC Halifax took the lead in the 13th minute against Port Vale – courtesy of a Niall Maher strike.

Port Vale equalised four minutes before half-time – and then found themselves 3-1 up after just five second-half minutes. A trialist got one back for Halifax – but it was merely a consolation.

Altrincham beat last year's National League champions by a single goal at Moss Lane – Phil Parkinson’s men scored the only goal of the game after ten minutes thanks to a Tom Peers goal.

Harry Maguire was watching on as Chesterfield thumped Gainsborough Trinity 4-0 in Lincolnshire. The England World Cup star was in the stands to see his brothers Joe and Laurence pitted against each other.

It was the Spireites’ Laurence Maguire who secured bragging rights – scoring the visitors’ fourth goal late on. Zavon Hines, Gozie Ugwu and a trialist also got on the scoresheet.

Chippenham saw off a youthful Swindon side 2-0 – goals in either half from Nick McCootie and Dean Evans wrapped up the win for Mark Collier’s men.

Leyton Orient have had no problems finding the net in pre-season. The O’s have now scored 15 goals in three games – with another four against East Thurrock United – they’re looking sharp.

Macauley Bonne started the rout just after the half-hour mark with a fine header – then added another on 57 minutes. Josh Koroma scored on 68 minutes, with an own goal – courtesy of Lewis Knight - compounding the misery for the hosts.

Ebbsfleet narrowly beat Eastbourne Borough 2-1 – Darren McQueen getting the opening goal on 28 minutes, his first for a year.

The away side converted a penalty after 63 minutes courtesy of Yemi Odubade but Borough couldn’t hold on – and Sean Shields won it for the hosts eight minutes from time.

Eastleigh and Basingstoke played out a hotly contested encounter with the game finishing 1-1. Basingstoke went in front on the half-hour mark thanks to a volley from outside the box.

Eastleigh plugged away before finding the equaliser on 56 minutes courtesy of a Ben Williamson header.

Hereford were unlucky not to win against a resilient Evesham side. Peter Beadle’s men created a hatful of chances and could’ve won the game.

The game finished 1-1 thanks to a last-minute Adam Hockey goal after Evesham had led since the first-half.

Sutton Untied were the visitors at Dorking – securing a comfortable 4-0 win. Harry Beautyman was the provider for the first two goals – first crossing for Jamie Collins, and then Charlie Clough.

Ten minutes in the second-half – Kieran Cadogan extended the lead further – before Dan Wishart’s cross caused confusion in the box and a Dorking defender scored an own-goal.

Chris Flood scored after 12 minutes to set Slough Town on their way to a victory against Kingstonian. Josh Jackman scored the hosts second 10 minutes later.

The visitors got a goal back just after the break – but Ben Harris restored Slough’s two goal lead in stoppage time to complete a fine 3-1 win.

Concord Rangers slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Hornchurch. The game was level until the second-half when the hosts took the lead on 53 minutes. Sammy Moore’s men then conceded a second after 77 minutes.

Torquay United and Plymouth played out a Devon derby – with Torquay more than holding their own against League One opposition.

A Graham Carey goal on the hour mark was enough to settle this one but plenty of Gary Owers’ new signings got a run out.

Gary Waddock saw his Aldershot side slip to a 3-0 defeat to Oxford United after some good results for the Shots so far in pre-season.

Two quick goals for the visitors just before half-time put the game beyond the home side’s reach – before James Henry finished Aldershot off in the second-half.

An end to end friendly in Wales saw Sam Ricketts’ Wrexham side draw 2-2 with Bangor City.

The Reds led thanks to a Chris Holroyd goal – but Bangor responded immediately to level the game up after 22 minutes.

The game continued to entertain after the break and the hosts took the lead 10 minutes later – former Wrexham player Alex Darlington giving the home side the lead.

Some 600 travelling fans would go home happy however as Wrexham pushed for a goal – Mike Fondop scored his third of pre-season and grab a draw for the Reds.

Kidderminster took the lead early in the first-half against Burton Albion – courtesy of an Ed Williams solo goal after 13 minutes.

Harriers led until just after half-time when the Brewers levelled thanks to youngster Joe Sbarra.

The League One side completed the turnaround two minutes from time.

Stockport County were edged out by a single goal at home to League One Rochdale – Joe Thompson with the only goal of the game for the Dale, who took a strong side to Edgeley Park.

A strong performance from Dagenham & Redbridge saw them get a credible draw against Colchester United – continuing their unbeaten pre-season campaign.

Peter Taylor’s men took the lead midway into the first-half through Michael Cheek’s free-kick.
An end to end game was settled five minutes from time as Diaz Wright cruelly levelled to deny Taylor’s side a win.

Alfreton won 3-0 against Buxton – scoring two goals in the first ten minutes. Craig King lifted the ball over the Buxton keeper after five minutes – before an own goal doubled the Reds’ lead five minutes later.

New signing Curtis Bateson finished the rout for the home side with an incredible run and finish.

Braintree came from behind to win 4-2 away at AFC Sudbury. The home side took the lead midway into the first-half.

Bradley Quinton’s men were sparked into life after going behind – two goals in a minute from Daniel Thompson and then Mohamed Bettamer – turned the game around before half-time.

The Iron continued in the same vein – Reece Grant slotted home to extend their lead. Bettamer got his second of the game ten minutes later.

As the game ebbed and flowed – Sudbury got a goal back to give themselves slight hope. But the game ended 2-4.

Chorley slipped to a defeat at Trafford – despite club stalwart Andrew Teague giving the Magpies the lead just before half-time. Seconds later, Trafford equalised to send the teams in level at the break.

Jamie Vermiglio will have been disappointed as his side conceded again as the home side completed the turnaround to win the game 2-1.

Curzon Ashton won 2-0 at Nelson FC. Chris Rowney gave the away side the lead – before substitute Ryan Shenton finished off the scoring.

AFC Fylde were runaway winners against Squires Gate. A host of new signings and trialists secured the win. James Hardy, Danny Rowe and a trialist scored three of Fylde’s four goals inside the first 15 minutes.

Another trialist scored as he turned home a Danny Rowe cross to secure the 4-0 win for the visitors.
