Welling United's 17 New Players Need A Good Start

Jamie Coyle says he won’t be hiding behind mass changed at Welling United if the club don’t get off to a good start.

Just a handful of players remain from last season at Park View Road and the player manager has decided to sign 17 new players.

But clearing the desks is a risk he had to take and despite having a go at his players following the midweek defeat to Dover, he thinks they can still have a good season.

Welling make the long trip to Truro City on the first day of the season and the club’s boss won’t be making excuses if they haven’t learned lessons.

“We lost 5-0 to Dover on Tuesday and as I said to the players I was massively disappointed. They let their heads drop and they rolled over.

“I learned a lot from that game. But I would rather learn now than two or three weeks into the season. We’ve learned a lot about a few of the boys we’ve got in the dressing room. It’s food for thought. Our organisation and shape wasn’t good enough.”

But he won’t let an inconsistent pre-season get him down ahead of next weekend’s trip to Cornwall to take on the White Tigers on day one.

Coyle added: We have got a lot of work to do, that’s clear. We’ve got 17 or 18 new players who have come in but that’s not an excuse. We won’t use it as one either.

“Friendly matches are running out but there’s still time to get to where we need to be.”
