Wednesday's Pre-Season Friendly Review

By Steve Whitney

Jurgen Klopp named a strong starting line-up for Liverpool’s maiden summer outing as they took on Vanarama National League club Tranmere Rovers in front of a near sell-out crowd at Prenton Park on Wednesday night.

James Milner gave the Reds the lead from the penalty spot and Serbian Marko Grujic added a second shortly afterwards from 30 yards.

Pedro Chirivella added a third in the second half and then Ben Woodburn made it 4-0 from the spot late on.

Tranmere made Liverpool work hard though and showed some neat football at times.

Craig Harrison, the new manager of Hartlepool United, enjoyed a 6-0 win in their opening friendly against Ebac Northern League side Billingham Town last week, and went one better last night by hammering Billingham`s league rivals Dunston UTS 7-0.

Rhys Oates carried on from where he left off at Bedford Terrace when his low shot gave Pools a 7th minute lead.

Even better followed 3 minutes later when Blair Adams beat three Dunston players before shooting low beyond Aiden Grant.

And there was a goal of the season contender on the half-hour mark when Jack Munns scored a stunning chip from the centre circle.

Liam Travers made an immediate impact after coming on, powering in a header from Ryan Donaldson's left-wing corner.

Triallist Junior Mondial won a penalty and converted it after being tripped, and fellow forward Josh Hawkes made it six in the 71st minute with a low strike beyond Dunston `keeper Aiden Grant.

There was time for a seventh for Pools as Jake Cassidy tapped in from close range from Kenton Richardson's cross.

Torquay United overcame Championship outfit Bristol City 2-0 at the Launa Windows Stadium.

Two late goals from triallist and substitute James Gray earned the Gulls a victory they thoroughly deserved.

York City, relegated to the National League North, shared a 2-2 draw with Sky Bet League One Scunthorpe United at Bootham Crescent.

The Minstermen led 2-0 with goals from new signings Louis Almond and Michael Rankine.

Scunny came back to level through Neal Bishop and Adelakun.

Jordan Thewlis scored the only goal of the game for York`s league rivals Harrogate Town as they won 1-0 at Toolstation Northern Counties East Leaguers Parkgate.

Thewlis` goal came just shy of the hour-mark.

Another National League North side, Darlington FC, were 5-1 winners at Northern Leaguers Newton Aycliffe.

David Syers opened the Quakers` account and then Josh Gillies, Mark Beck, Syers again and an un-named triallist added to the tally, with Craig Hutchinson replying.

Darlington`s rivals Kidderminster Harriers were beaten 3-0 at Aggborough by Championship outfit Aston Villa.

Villa hit a 9th minute opener through Conor Hourihane but had to weather a fair amount of Harriers attacks, the lead eventually being doubled after the half-hour mark when James Chester turned in a free-kick.

Harriers were a good match for their higher-grade opponents throughout the night and the third from Harry McKirdy was perhaps a touch flattering for the visitors.

Villa also sent a side to AFC Telford United on the same night and won 4-0 at the New Bucks Head.

With Villa boss Steve Bruce in attendance, it took 37 minutes for Villa to breakthrough with a deflected effort from Callum O`Hare.

Henri Lansbury doubled Villa`s lead from the spot 4 minutes into the second half, and 5 minutes later, Gabby Agbonlahor made it 3-0.

Lansbury converted a late fourth, also from the spot, after Telford `keeper Jasbir Singh had brought Mitchell Clark down.

National League South side Truro City drew 2-2 with South West Peninsula Leaguers Bodmin Town.

Stewart Yetton and Marcello Jones were on target for the White Tigers, with former City man Jake Ash scoring for the hosts.
