Wealdstone Can Sense Survival But Cox Refuses To Rest

The Stones’ safety chances looked slim on Tuesday night, a home defeat to Southend United leaving them with it all to do.

Their chances looked all but dead in the water when they were 2-0 down to pretty much doomed Dorking Wanderers before a stunning comeback brought new life to their season.

Then the north west Londoners did the unthinkable and unsaddled champions Chesterfield, becoming the first team to keep a clean sheet against them in 2024.

Wealdstone now sit three points clear with five days of the season left but interim manager Cox knows there could still be one more twist to come.

They face Eastleigh tonight hoping to get the job done but he sent out a warning to anything thinking the hard work has already been done.

Cox said. “We’ve still got two games left - we’ve certainly not done it yet, we can still mathematically be caught so we’ve got to keep that in our mind.

“We’ve got to dust ourselves down and get ourselves ready for a big game against Eastleigh on Tuesday knowing that if we win, we hopefully can avoid that final day of the season tension.

“All I asked when I took over the team was that the players leave their hearts out on that pitch, and the last few matches they have certainly done that.

“We managed to nullify the champions - what more could I ask for? They’ve been fantastic in a very demanding and high pressured situation.

“After the last week, we’re a little bruised and we’re a bit battered, but it’s all about the determination they had out on that pitch. It’s pride for themselves and love for the club.”
