Johnson replaced Gary Owers last week with the Gulls stuck in a bit of a rut.
Their tricky trip to Hungerford had the potential to make things worse before they got better for the Devon club but a 2-0 victory represented a good first day at the office for the new boss.
Torquay move up into 12th in the National League South thanks to goals from striker Jamie Reid and reliable midfielder Asa Hall.
But Johnson can already see where improvement is required after just two days in the job.
“I’ve got to say I’m proud of the players, this isn’t an easy fixture and they put in a real shift, it was a good effort,” the former Bristol City, Yeovil and Chesterfield manager said.
“But it’s by no means perfect, we hope to get better in the future - there’s certainly a lot to improve on.
“That said they created plenty of opportunities, they put in not many who could say they didn’t put in an effort.
“It was a fresh start. It was good to show the fans a passionate performance and yes we’ve got a way to go of course but it’s a step in the right direction.”
