Watt Wants Big Stones Peformance For Saunders

Maidstone United caretaker manager Steve Watt has called on his side to put on a show for their former manager, writes Tom Scott.

Jay Saunders left the Stones this week after seven years at the helm and Watt – Saunders’ former assistant – is currently in caretaker charge at the club.

“It’s a sad, sad day, it really is.” he told Kent Online. “What Jay’s done for the club has been incredible really.

“From when he took over to where it is now, it’s a shame and football’s cruel. It’s a day I never expected to come.

“Jay brought all the players to the club and a lot of them probably joined because of Jay himself. We have to put on a good performance and do it for Jay.”

A former Maidstone player, Watt spent last season managing Margate and was appointed as Saunders’ assistant in the summer.

But he isn’t looking too far into the future just yet.

“At the minute I’ve been asked to take the team and that’s all I’m interest in. I’m gutted for Jay, that’s my feeling.”

“I’ve never hid my love for the club and like I said to them, I’ll do whatever they need me to do. If it’s one game or longer, that’s down to the club.”

He added, “I’ll do what the club needs me to do.”

Watt’s first game in charge is a trip to Tyneside to face Steve Watson’s Gateshead on Saturday.
