Watson Calls For Heed To Build On Improbable Win

By Steven Coney

Steve Watson wants his Gateshead side to turn the International Stadium into a fortress after a late goal gave them a big three points against Maidstone United.

Lewis McNall gave Heed an early lead before Jai Reason’s leveller for the Stones. Gateshead keeper Dan Hanford saw red with 15 minutes to go and replacement stopper James Montgomery then saved a Reason penalty.

There was more drama to come, however, as Ben Fox popped up with three minutes remaining to hand the home side a vital victory.

It signalled only their second home win in ten National League fixtures and Watson was delighted with the three points even though the game didn’t quite go to plan.

He told the club’s YouTube channel: “It’s just a relief to get three points at home. We couldn’t have planned how things panned out but we played well and that was important.

“We didn’t put our chances away and kill the game off the way we hoped we would but everybody stuck to their tasks.

“We were desperate to win the game and that feeling we’ve got in the dressing room, it’s one we need to see more of here.”
