Bur Charlie Wassmer is cut from a different cloth. Back at the club he helped take to the play-offs two years ago, it’s like he’s not been away.
The Hampton & Richmond Borough defensive general knows how to rally the troops. Since signing from Billericay Town in September, the Beavers have looked unplayable – losing just once since his arrival.
Straight into the team after signing, Wassmer said their win over Chesham in the FA Cup could be “a platform to build on”. The certainly did that in October.
Wassmer played a crucial role in wins over Welling United and Maidstone United – that was either side of scoring the winning goal against Hungerford Town.
It’s a run that has seen Gary McCann’s side drag themselves away from the foot of the league to the safer surroundings of mid-table.
If momentum is really that important in football, watch out for Wassmer and his revitalised Hampton team-mates.
