Warrington Cause Buildbase FA Trophy Replay Upset

By Steve Whitney

Evo-Stik League Premier promotion-chasers Warrington Town caused the upset of Tuesday night`s Buildbase FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round replays.

The Wire put Vanarama National League North side Tamworth out of the competition at Cantilever Park with a 3-0 success.

The outcome sounds decisive enough, but after the home side led with a Jamie McDonald brace in the 13th and 33rd minutes, the Lambs dominated the second half after the break but were denied by some excellent defending.

And then with a minute left of normal time, Tony Gray rounded off the victory with a third on the breakaway.

The victory for Warrington, currently second in the table, gives them a tie with league rivals and leaders Altrincham on December 16th.

In the all-National League North replay, two-time winners Kidderminster Harriers went through after beating Boston United 2-0 at Aggborough.

The Pilgrims were beaten after conceding a goal in both halves.

Elton Ngwatala powered the hosts into an 11th minute lead which Joe Ironside doubled 14 minutes after half-time.

The all-National League South replay between Bognor Regis Town and Hemel Hempstead Town went the way of the struggling Rocks at Nyewood Lane.

On a bitterly cold evening on the Sussex coast, Bognor scored what proved to be the only goal on 71 minutes when Ibra Sekajja ran on to a fine through ball before prodding the ball beyond Tudors` keeper Laurie Walker.

But both sides finished ten-aside when Jimmy Muitt beat Ebby Nelson-Addy for pace inside Bognor’s half and the substitute brought him down and was shown a straight red card. But in the aftermath, Bognor’s Sami El-Abd was also given a straight red card for dissent.

Bognor now face Evo-Stik League South West side Taunton Town away in the next round.

Bognor`s league rivals and Sussex neighbours Eastbourne Borough are also through, but it took a penalty shoot-out for Boro to overcome Evo-Stik League South Premier side Royston Town at Garden Walk.

The game was 10 minutes later starting due to Eastbourne`s late arrival because of usual heavy traffic on the M25.

And it was the home Crows who drew first blood by taking a 16th minute lead when John Frendo set up Josh Castiglione, whose shot squirmed under Boro keeper Mark Smith.

And when Royston doubled their lead 8 minutes into the second half with a fine header by Ed Asafu-Adjaye from a corner, things looked bleak for the National Legaue South outfit.

But on 62 minutes, Gavin McCallum pulled one back.

And then 5 minutes from time, a bizarre equaliser was credited to Harry Ransom, although it could also have been an own goal.

That took the tie into extra-time, but no further goals came in the extra 30 minutes, so it was to spot-kicks to decide who will travel to National League Dover Athletic in the First Round.

And after misses for both sides, it was Ransom who scored the winning penalty for Boro to take them through 4-3.

In an original Third Qualifying Round tie held over due to Margate having to play a delayed Second Qualifying Round game last Saturday, National League South outfit Bath City were held to a 0-0 draw by their Bostik Premier opponents at Twerton Park.

Margate extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to ten games with a hardworking and well-organised performance.

And the Kent club had the best chance of the game in the second half when Bath had keeper Luke Southwood to thank for pulling off an outstanding save to deny Kane Haysman what looked a certain goal from a glancing header.

But it will require a replay at Hartsdown Park next Tuesday.
