Sutton topped the table earlier this week and although they lost first place due to Aldershot Town winning, they stay close to the summit.
"It's a nice feeling to be near top at this stage, with nearly a half of the season gone, but we know that it is our job to ensure that we stay there now," Walton said.
"We went on a great run, lost to Woking, in a game that was really close and we could have got something, we then went unbeaten against lost to Torquay, good teams don't lose two in a row, we showed that last week.
"Beating Guiseley was the kind of performance we needed, it was professional, we managed the game,
"It is such a tight league, we have an aim, an ambition, the players that have come in, we have good players here and out on loan, lads that are out injured, the quality is there and Paul is managing the group well, we know we can go far.
"There is momentum here, obviously last season there was the FA Cup run and the publicity it got us."
