Waddock Wants More Noise From Shots Fans

By David Richardson

Aldershot Town manager Gary Waddock was disappointed that their supporters didn't try to lift his depleted side yesterday as they slipped up at home to Dover Athletic.

The EBB Stadium is known for its noise that the home fans generate but yesterday's atmosphere fell below expectations, with the Whites running out 2-0 winners - enough to lift them to the top of the Vanarama National League.

After a promising start to the season, injuries have taken there toll on Waddock's squad and they have now one just once in their last six games.

Nine players were missing yesterday, who were either injured or suspended, as goals in each half from Giancarlo Gallifuoco and Kadell Daniel sank the Shots.

Speaking to the club's website afterwards, Waddock said: "Considering the amount of possession we had, we didn't work their goalkeeper well enough or hard enough - and they took their chances when they cropped up.

"The only stat that counts is the scoreline and if you don't do enough with the amount of possession we had, you don't deserve to win a football match.

What I will say is that the players gave everything, they took on board what was said to them leading into the game, bearing in mind we had to mould a team into shape for it."

And on the atmosphere inside the ground, Waddock added: "I think going into the game we were fifth, two points off the top of the table and when things aren't going our way during a course of a game, it just seems everything goes flat. I don't think that's fair because the players are trying their best and the whole place went flat.

"At the moment we need some help, some encouragement, some support. Was it 1800 here today, about 140-odd Dover? I'm not sure that's what we're looking for.

"When everything's going well, it's great, fantastic, but we want to make this a hard place to come to. When it's silent it makes it a lot easier for the opposition. The players are giving their all. It's a long hard season, we're going to have moments like this but we need to all stick together."

The former Wycombe manager continued: "If things are not going our way which they won't during the course of the season we need some encouragement and help. That's what I was looking for today, I wanted the volume to go up. In fairness to Dover, they were very vocal.

"I know what this place is like when it's loud. I'm not using it as an excuse but we were two points off the top, in fifth place with nine players injured. We're doing alright."
