Waddock Wants His Shots To Be A Bit More Ruthless

Gary Waddock insists there’s still room for improvement for his Aldershot side – and shooting practice could be on the agenda in training.

Against AFC Wimbledon the Shots weren’t at their sharpest in front of goal, it's fair to say.

Waddock was delighted with the performance of his players, if not the finishing. But he said the team is in a good place going into their first day match with promoted FC Halifax.

“It was a good game in difficult conditions, it was a fantastic work out,” the manager said.

“Both teams tried to play the right way, but I was pleased with our performance.

“You try and slowly get to the point at the end of pre-season where you are firing on all cylinders. The intensity that we play at helps us get there. We passed the ball well.”

But he wasn’t totally content. “We’re not firing yet, there’s always room for improvement. There was chances at both ends, and we maybe we needed to be a bit more ruthless. The players knows they’ should have done better when the opportunities came about.

“I think we invited pressure on ourselves by giving free-kicks away in our own half but overall I was happy with how we went about things.

“I’m pleased with where we are with a week to go. Going to Halifax will be difficult but we know we’ve had a good pre-season behind us.”
