Veteran Lennie To Lend A Hand At Hartlepool United

Hartlepool United hope the experience of Lennie Lawrence can help turn fortunes around after he agreed to take over on a caretaker basis.

The National League club are searching for John Askey’s replacement after parting company with their manager following a troubled end to 2023.

Askey, who had been in charge since February, picked up only three wins in his last 19 league games and that run saw Pools drop worrinyingly to 17th place.

The club won’t rush finding his replacement and have asked 76-year-old Lawrence to take the reins against Oxford City on Saturday.

The former Charlton, Middlesbrough and Luton boss will be assisted by first-team coach Antony Sweeney.

A club statement confirmed: “Lennie has attended the majority of games both last season and this season in his existing role for the Club, as such he knows the current playing squad and staff well.

“Antony will continue to be out on the grass for training this week, ensuring the correct preparations for the match against Oxford City are made.

“The search for a new permanent manager is well underway and we hope to appoint someone in the near future.”
