Vanarama's National League North fan preview: Farsley Celtic

Farsley Celtic mega fan Ian Gardner casts his eye over the new season and what a first season back in the National League for almost a decade will hold.

League sponsors Vanarama have been getting the fans’ perspective ahead of the new season - which kicks off this Saturday

There’s a big year ahead – what does it hold for you Farsley Celtic fans?
Change. And a lot of it. There’s been the takeover, a rebrand. I personally don’t pay to watch a kit or a new badge, I pay to watch my team and the wonderful brand of football Adam Lakeland has us playing. We could honestly play in bin bags and I’d still pass through the turnstiles every week to cheer the lads on!

You’ve kept hold of your top-scorer Jimmy Spencer who has also taken on an ambassadorial role with the club. It must be a huge plus for the club to have such an experience campaigner not only playing for you but flying the flag for you too.
The lad’s a class act, isn’t he? I think he won every award going last season so that shows just how highly regarded he is both at Farsley and by everyone else. I think if he stays fit, he can fire us to great things again.

Which signing has you desperate for the season to start?
It has to be Tyler Walton for me. I’ve been massively impressed with what I’ve seen so far this pre-season. Adam Lakeland has found us a real gem.

Who will catch the eye most for your side?
Most fans will tell you it’s Jimmy Spencer, but personally I believe it’s Nathan Cartman. His hold up play is fantastic but it’s his tireless and selfless performances week in week out that make him stand out for me. A lot of strikers are judged on their goal return, but it’s all the hard work off the ball that often goes unnoticed and that’s really where Nathan excels.

Who will push for promotion and who could be the stand-out performers?
I think Brackley will definitely be up there again and possibly York - I believe the bookies have them as favourites and I can see why. Also, Spennymoor. I’ve watched their rise ever since we played them a few seasons ago and their consistency is something I hope we can replicate here.

What away day is highlighted brightest on the calendar?
Blyth Spartans. I’ll be honest as soon as the fixtures were released, it was the first away game I looked for. I’ve always had a soft spot for Real Betis, and I know there’s a bond between the two clubs. I do love stories like this and how the football family grows in unusual ways.

Which game are you most hopeful you’ll win?
I’d say the local games against both Bradford (Park Avenue) and Guiseley for me. I have a few friends that support both teams, so it’s about the bragging rights.

You can make one signing from an opposing team – who is it?
I think I’d go for Brackley Town’s Shane Byrne. We have a look of quality already in midfield, but a player like Shane would add extra steel and I believe he would free up our current crop to become even more creative.

Simply, where will you finish this season?
My heart is looking towards the play-offs whilst my head is saying around 15th. I’ll happily meet somewhere in the middle. I know I’ll be accused of not been ambitious enough but I think a solid first season at this level with room to improve going forward is what every promoted team hopes for.
