Vanarama National League Round-Up...

By Steve Whitney

With Forest Green Rovers having won on Friday night and Cheltenham Town`s game....

...against bottom side Kidderminster Harriers being postponed, third-placed Grimsby Town had the opportunity to close the gap on the top two in the Vanarama National League on Saturday when they hosted Guiseley AFC at Blundell Park.

However, in front of a crowd of 5,093, the Mariners were held to a 1-1 draw by a Lions` outfit who fully deserved their point.

Chances were few and far between in the opening half.

The home side`s Nathan Arnold tried his luck from 20 yards, but the Mariners were dealt a blow 5 minutes before the interval when Guiseley took a shock lead.

With their first attempt at goal, Oliver Norburn made the most of a fortunate rebound to clip a superb effort past James McKeown into the corner of the net.

After the break, Josh Gowling who came within inches of putting Town back on level terms from a set-piece.

And Grimsby kept pushing for an equaliser which finally came on 72 minutes.

A neat flick-on from Omar Bogle fell kindly for Padraig Amond, who was on hand to net from close range.

It means Town are ten points off the summit, with a game in hand on the leading pair.

Kingsley James’ late equaliser rescued a point for FC Halifax Town as they drew 2-2 with Lincoln City at The Shay.

It was the visiting Imps who took a 16th minute lead when Craig Stanley netted from 18 yards.

Eleven minutes later the hosts were back on level terms when Sam Walker set up top scorer Shaun Tuton to score from a narrow angle.

Substitute Liam Hearn, back in the Lincoln squad after being recalled from his loan, took advantage to restore Lincoln`s lead on 69 minutes – just 4 minutes after coming off the bench.

But then, with less than a minute of normal time remaining, James equalised with a fine left-footed strike past Paul Farman to keep Jim Harvey`s unbeaten run since taking over as first caretaker and then permanent manager.

Tranmere Rovers` run of two wins and a draw came to an end at Prenton Park against a Macclesfield Town side who are now fifth.

It was a game dominated by Rovers, who bossed the possession stats 61% to 39% but weren`t able to do the crucial thing, which was to beat the Silkmen`s goalkeeper, who for 80 minutes was substitute Ritchie Branagan after Shwan Jalal received a 10th minute injury.

The visitors also lost forward Paul Lewis because of injury 10 minutes later, but managed to throw off those disappointments to take a 31st minute lead when Jack Sampson converted Chris Holroyd`s cross.

New Tranmere loan signing Jeff Hughes, James Norwood, Adam Mekki and Cole Stockton were all denied by Branagan in a second half that the home side dominated.

But Macc held on for three crucial points to move into the play-off places.

Woking moved up to seventh in the table after completing a fifth match unbeaten against Aldershot Town at Kingfield.

The Shots started well, with Daniel Carr twice going close, but fell behind slightly against the run of play in the 25th minute when John Goddard`s cross was converted by Joe Quigley.

And crucially, in the very last minute of the first half, Woking doubled their advantage when Quigley`s pass found Goddard, who beat Phil Smith from 12 yards out.

The visitors forced the Cards back in the second period and it came as little surprise when they reduced the deficit with 16 minutes to go when, after Jim Stevenson`s effort had been saved by Jake Cole, Rhys Browne scored from the resultant corner.

Dan Walker, Carr and Sean McGinty all came close to equalising, but Woking held on for the points.

Gateshead are now tenth, but had to be content with just one point from their game at the International Stadium against Barrow AFC.

But for the majority of the game it looked as though the Tynesiders would hold on for all three points, until the Bluebirds equalised late on.

After going close on several occasions early on, most notably through John Shaw and CJ Hamilton, Gateshead went ahead in the 40th minute.

Joel Dixon brought Ryan Bowman down in the box and the striker dusted himself down to convert the resulting penalty.

Barrow put the home side under increasing pressure in the second half and home keeper Sam Russell was kept busy saving from Andy Cook and Simon Grand.

Barrow forced five successive corners before Russell was finally beaten 6 minutes from time when new signing Jordan Williams powered home the equaliser from a narrow angle.

Southport claimed a sixth consecutive league win as they came from behind to beat Wrexham at the Merseyrail Community Stadium.

Wes York put Wrexham ahead from close range after 18 minutes.

But 4 minutes before the break Louis Almond's deflected effort saw the hosts level at the break.

Luke Foster headed Southport in front after 51 minutes.

But substitute James Gray scored for the visitors from a corner to make it 2-2 with 19 minutes to go.

Five minutes from time Jamal Fyfield brought Almond down in the area and the striker stepped up to score from the spot to win the game.

It completed a `double` for Port over a Wrexham side who have now lost three in a row.

The Cheshire derby between Chester FC and Altrincham finished all-square at 1-1 to leave the visitors two points above the drop zone.

Chester broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Ross Hannah received a pass from Danny Hattersley before beating a defender and poking the ball home from close range.

Michael Rankine eventually levelled matters for the Robins on the hour-mark when he beat keeper Jon Worsnop to a right wing Jordan Sinnott cross and saw his header find the bottom corner.

Rankine tested Worsnop with a header from a George Bowerman delivery as 6 minutes of stoppage time were shown.

And Worsnop pulled off a double save to deny Bowerman and Rankine again as the visitors pressed for a winner.

Horrendous conditions at Crabble meant that Dover Athletic's clash with Welling United was abandoned on 68 minutes with the score at 0-0.

Persistent rain from just before kick-off right through until the midway point of the second half meant the referee had little alternative but to call a halt to proceedings.
