Vanarama Make Their Team Of The Weekend Picks!

By Sam Elliott

FA Cup action dominated the Vanarama National League schedule as 31 teams ensured they’ll be in the hat for tonight’s 1st Round draw.

Teams from EFL Leagues One and Two enter the competition at this stage with the draw taking place at Bradford City’s Valley Parade at 7pm.

Elsewhere, there were fixtures in National League North and South to complete our composite XI. As a result, competition for places was stiffer than ever!

Each week, title sponsors Vanarama provide their Team of the Week for the three divisions and use this column to justify their selections...

It took a goal in the third minute of stoppage time from Bim Pepple to send Southend United through 1-0 at Eastleigh’s expense. Goalkeeper Collin Andeng Ndi’s clean sheet means he is our No.1 this week.

Oldham Athletic eased past National League rivals FC Halifax Town 4-2. Centre-back Will Sutton got the fourth for Micky Mellon’s men who have won five of their last six in all competitions.

Another side leaving it late to advance were Chesham United. At a packed-out Meadow, Jack Cawley got the stoppage-time winner as the Generals overcame Yeovil Town.

Warrington Town were 2-1 winners at Radcliffe in Vanarama National League North, moving four points clear of the drop zone. Murphy Bennett won more defensive duels (9) and successfully completed more defensive actions (13) than any right-back in the division.

Josh Coley has been one of the stars of Sutton United’s season so far and took his fine form into the FA Cup on Saturday. The Us were 2-0 up at Chertsey inside 12 minutes with Coley bagging his fifth of the season in a 3-1 win.

Woking were made to work for their first-round place by Slough Town of the South. A Harry Beautyman brace ensured the hosts played their Cards right.

In the South, Dorking Wanderers picked up a big win over league-leaders Hemel Hempstead Town. Captain Charlie Carter led by example, scoring a ninth-minute opener for the hosts who eventually ran out 3-2 winners.

Millar Matthews-Lewis bagged a brace as Farnborough down Enfield Town with a 4-1 win. He had more shots (4), penalty area touches (9) and a higher expected goals tally (1.2) than any striker in Vanarama National League South on Saturday.

As ways to introduce yourself go, a hat-trick in a resounding home win rank highly. And that’s what Alex Reid did for new side Wealdstone after joining on loan from Oldham Athletic. He’s there until January and the Stones are into Round One after beating Gosport Borough 4-1.

Maidstone United were the heroes of last year’s FA Cup, winning seven matches to set up a fifth-round tie against Championship side Coventry City. They won 1-0 at Herne Bay on Saturday with striker Aaron Blair impressing.

Is there a more in-form forward in the National League than Kairo Mitchell? The Rochdale hitman bagged a hat-trick as the Dale won 4-1 at AFC Fylde in the FA Cup. That means it’s now 12 goes in his last nine all-competition appearances.
