Vanarama Make Their Team Of The Weekend Picks!

By Sam Elliott

Somehow, we are a quarter of the way through the Vanarama National League season and, after 12 games, it’s Barnet who top the pile.

The Bees were 2-0 winners over AFC Fylde in front of 2,500 supporters, while fellow challengers York City were held to a goalless draw by playoff-chasing Eastleigh.

Forest Green Rovers and Gateshead both picked up wins while, at the foot of the table, only Wealdstone of the bottom four picked up anything.

Each week, title sponsors Vanarama provide their Team of the Week for the three divisions and use this column to justify their selections...

Solihull Moors picked up a credible point on the road at Dagenham and Redbridge and they had Laurie Walker to thank for that. The former Barnet custodian made seven saves at Victoria Road – more than any keeper in the division on MD12.

It’s now back-to-back wins without conceding for Rochdale who are over their brief blip. Tobi Adebayo-Rowling picked up the assist in their 1-0 win over Braintree Town, while also completing 16/19 passes for the hosts.

Altrincham have won consecutive games for the first time this season thanks to their 2-1 triumph at Braintree Town. Centre-back Jake Cooper recorded an assist but also completed six of seven defensive actions successfully, while regaining possession nine times.

His centre-back partner is Eastleigh’s Ludwig Francillette. Not many teams can stop York City, but the Spitfires managed it, with their French stopper 100 per cent on defensive duels and defensive actions at the LNER.

Gateshead picked up an impressive 3-1 win at Southend United with Luke Hannant on target from the spot. The left-back ranked seventh in his position for completed passes with 18/26 and completed four of five in the final third.

Oldham Athletic compounded Ebbsfleet United’s woes with a 2-1 win at the Kuflink Stadium on Matchday 12. Josh Lundstram completed four of five dribbles on the day – more than any other central midfielder on Saturday.

Anthony Hartigan was at his metronomic best for leaders Barnet as they beat AFC Fylde in front of a bumper crowd at The Hive. He ranked second among all central midfielders for passes attempted (82) and completed (79), as well as completing more final-third passes (18) than any other player in his position.

Sutton United are unbeaten in four thanks to their 2-1 win at Woking. Lewis Simper opened the scoring after 13 minutes for the Us. He also won four of five defensive duels and completed 11 ball recoveries for the visitors.

Josh Barrett got his third of the season as Aldershot Town drew 1-1 at Yeovil Town. He attempted (5) and completed (2) more dribbles than any other forward on Matchday 12 and was second for pass completions with 22.

It’s two games, two wins, two goals for Maidenhead United’s Shawn McCoulsky who netted in the Magpies’ 2-1 victory at Boston United. He attempted (24) more aerial duels than any other striker and won the second most with 10.
