Unibet's Vanarama National League Matchday 9 Preview

By Sam Elliott

After some impressive five-goal salutes last time out, what warning signs will be fired on Tuesday night?

Everyone sat out Saturday as a mark of respect, but Notts County, Wrexham and Solihull Moors all went goal crazy in the last outing - however, it is still Chesterfield who lead the way.

It’s not just the promotion race that’s already gripping, the race for the Golden Boot already looks eye-popping. Here’s Unibet’s take on the weekend’s big games in midweek.

Altrincham vs Scunthorpe United

A meeting of the division’s bottom two clubs is already a match neither can really afford to lose.

This isn’t how Altrincham saw things going early on in their first ever full-time season.

Scunthorpe, in their first match since the axe fell on manager Keith Hill, need to stem the flow quickly after six painful straight defeats.

Interim Iron manager Tony Daws has taken over and he needs to pull a rabbit from the hat.

Chesterfield vs Southend United

While those sitting just behind were turning on the style, Chesterfield’s excellent win at Oldham perhaps went a little under the radar last time out.

Not for Paul Cook, his team passing the test with ease - and he knows they’ve got goals in them too.

At home, the Spireites look a cut above, winning three from three, letting in just one goal.

Southend, many tipsters’ call for a push this time, can’t quite work out what they want to do this season.

So good against Oldham and Maidenhead United, but not at the races at home to Torquay United. They’ve only scored more than one goal once this season and need to re-find those scoring boots.

Aldershot Town vs Notts County

Nothing is ever certain in football, of course.

But there is a pretty good chance of one thing happening at Meadow Lane on Tuesday night.

Notts County score in every home game they play. They have done since Eastleigh visited three months before the end of the Covid-chaos that was the 2020-21 season.

Chances of them carrying that on as they welcome Aldershot? Pretty high.

Not just because of the visitors’ six-point start, losing five of their seven so far. But it’s also to do with Notts’ current form, and in particular a summer signing who has taken no time at all to settle.

Macaulay Langstaff has nine National League goals already, a stunning statistic when you consider we’re only just approaching mid-September.

If the Shots are to have any chance they will need to find the form that bit high-flying Barnet last time out.

Not many will fancy their chances in Nottingham but that could well work in their favour.

What a night it promises to be!
