Unibet's Vanarama National League Matchday 4 Preview

By Sam Elliott

We’ve reached match week four already and after a humdinger of a midweek programme, what does Saturday have in store?

The league will start to take shape pretty soon and nobody wants to get left behind.

So how much can you read into a good or a bad start? Well no panic buttons are being pushed quite yet and there’s certainly no wild celebrations - we’re just getting going and there’s a lot to look forward to this weekend.

Wealdstone vs FC Halifax Town

Stone the crows! Who saw this start coming from both these clubs?

Part-timers Wealdstone stunned Oldham at Boundary Park on Tuesday after sending Bromley packing in an absorbing game to leave manager Stuart Maynard thrilled to bits.

FC Halifax Town, who reached the play-offs last season, sit bottom of the fledgling table with one point to show from their first three matches.

Chris Millington did see the positives in their 0-0 draw with Southend United but with no goals scored yet the Shaymen really need to start finding their shooting boots and quickly.

Dagenham & Redbridge vs Maidenhead United

Every year, the tipsters say they’ll struggle but once again Maidenhead United are proving people wrong.

Alan Devonshire’s team - one of the few semi-pro sides left in the National League - have a six-point start and want the games to keep on coming.

Already they have stunned Scunthorpe United and sent Altrincham home with a defeat to think about on the long trip back on Tuesday.

What Dagenham & Redbridge would have given for such a profitable first few weeks.

A two point return from a healthy first three looking fixtures against Gateshead, Woking and Eastleigh is not how they wanted to see in the new season but there’s plenty of time for the tide to turn.

Barnet vs Woking

It’s still too early for most people to be taking the league tables too seriously.

But few would deny Barnet and Woking fans a few days to indulge after their electric starts to the new season.

The Bees haven’t had much string for a few years, looking over their shoulders at the relegation places with some inconsistent displays and a large player turnover.

But things could be different this time, they’re top and the fans are loving life after defeating FC Halifax and Yeovil Town, whilst cursing the fact they only came home from Gateshead with a point.

Woking have an early head of steam and look strong at home - Kyran Lofthouse’s double did for Scunthrope in midweek, and they were too good for Dagenham last Saturday.

Now Darren Sarll wants some away results to go with their promising performances in front of their fans.

The Cards played a great hand at the Hive last year, running out 2-0 winners. But it will take something special to knock the early leaders off their stride.

What a weekend we’ve got ahead of us!
