Unibet's Vanarama National League Matchday 39 Preview

By Sam Elliott

For interested observers, there’s always something about two dogged title chasers both facing really awkward away games. In Cheltenham week, there are hurdles to jump!

There’s also something interesting about watching the next best two teams battle it out without the title spotlight on them. Oh, and a meaty third-from-bottom vs fourth-from-bottom collision!

It’s going to be some weekend and Unibet have it all covered.

Gateshead vs Torquay United

Neither side can move out of the relegation zone, regardless of what happens on Saturday.

But that can’t disguise the importance of the match between the two clubs sitting below the dreaded dotted line.

Both have been in Step 2 in recent years and don’t really fancy a return trip.

Torquay, with five losses from six, know time is fast running out and with just two defeats in eight, Gateshead won’t be easily preyed upon.

Woking vs Chesterfield

If it really is all in the planning, penny for the thoughts of both these managers ahead of the live BT Sport clash.

Paul Cook and Darren Sarll know it’s very likely they’ll be in the play-offs barring a real disaster and they may not want to show their full hand, even in mid-March.

But the beauty is that every game is still crucial with a home semi-final - and avoiding the pesky Eliminators - so important.

Chesterfield fans hope their season has some stability now after a ten point return from their past four games.

Only York City have left Woking with three points to show for it in the last 12 games and with home form like that, they’ll be desperate to get third place.

Bromley vs Wrexham

Ah, that treacherous away day. There’s nothing quite like it for those taking a watch brief as the title race prepares to twist and turn into the final straight.

They’ve already hit the 90 point mark and they’re on course to break records.

But this weekend the EFL hunters both have tough assignments and for the rest of us, grab the popcorn and pull up a seat!

Wrexham will know nobody gets an easy ride at Bromley, just ask the team they’re trying to pull clear of.

Notts County needed a late, late leveller to take a point from Hayes Lane a few weeks ago and only the top two have lost fewer home matches than Andy Woodman’s men.

It’s just as tricky at Barnet for the Magpies, who just keep recovering from going a goal down.

But a repair job is always more tricky on the road, especially when the Bees have won six of the last nine at home.

What a weekend we’ve got coming up!
