Unibet's Vanarama National League Matchday 39 Preview

By Sam Elliott

There’s now only five weeks to go - but there’s still plenty of time for some twists and turns.

Most accept that if the title race is to change course then things need to start to swing sooner rather than later.

Now we get a close up look at leaders Stockport County on Saturday - but will the pressure be applied by the time the BT Sport game kicks-off at 5.20pm? Here’s our weekly run-through.

Stockport County vs Southend United

The message from Dave Challinor to his players is clear - focus on just yourself and ignore all outside noise.

The lead is eight points but with chasers Wrexham at home to Eastleigh before, neutrals‘ hopes of a photo finish could be cranked up before the leaders kick a ball. Others aren’t out of it, either.

Not that Stockport County are displaying any kind of championship nerve.

They have won 16 from 17 and appear to be facing Southend United at the right time after two dreadful defeats to Yeovil Town and Notts County.

Bromley vs Dagenham & Redbridge

Both these two have to find their form and fast if they want their seasons to be extended beyond the middle of May.

Bromley’s league results have fallen off the cliff, even if they did confirm their place at Wembley last weekend.

Winless in nine National League games now, Andy Woodman’s team suddenly find themselves eight points off the pace.

Dagenham are a little closer to the top seven pack but really could have done with getting back to winning ways when out-of-sorts Boreham Wood visited in midweek.

There’s always one team who comes late to the promotion party and this represents a real chance for both to get the wheels turning again.

Torquay United vs Notts County

How Gary Johnson and his Torquay United team just wish the season had started in the New Year.

They have already won seven times in 2022 - and suffered just two defeats.

Winning their last two so impressively, the fear is they may have timed their surge in the second half of the season a little too late with nine points still to make up.

The Gulls have won the same number of times as Notts County have this calendar year, and their head coach Ian Burchnall wants to tie up a play-off place as quickly as possible.

Mathematically it is still a few weeks away but victory at Plainmoor will be a big step towards that - but it’s a place that they need to set the record straight at.

Torquay beat County in the semi-finals of the play-offs last season – 4-2 after extra-time – and it was a painful trip to Devon.

Earlier this season the game ended 1-1 but in Rúben Rodrigues the Magpies have a player who is really producing again. His hat-trick at Southend took him to 15 for the season.

Armani Little is Torquay’s midfield man in double figures and if they are to beat the odds and nudge their way in, he will have to keep producing.

It’s going to be another must-watch weekend!
