Unibet's Vanarama National League Matchday 14 Preview

By Sam Elliott

Tuesday night’s action had just about everything - so what has Saturday got in store?

Comebacks, shock scorelines, sackings and a first look for some Hollywood owners at their new club kept everyone on their toes in midweek.

Now we’ve got the latest instalment - and in the last set of matches before the clocks go back, there’s little time for some of the title hopefuls to hang around.

Every week, new betting partner Unibet will run the rule over the weekend’s main matches in the division.

Wrexham v Torquay United

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney saw for themselves how challenging the National League really is at Maidenhead United.

The new owners couldn’t have written the script in a game that had it all but the twist was a late defeat following a great comeback.

Looking excellent one week and anything but challengers the next, Wrexham need to get on a good run - starting on Saturday.

While Torquay United haven’t hit the ground running, they have big game players as the Dragons found out last season.

Gary Johnson’s side did the double over them in 2020-21 but having taken just one point from 12 on the road, the Gulls will need to find their bite.

Barnet v Aldershot Town

Well, there wasn’t too many people who saw that coming on Tuesday night. But it says something about the ever unpredictable National League season that Barnet’s stunning win at Stockport County wasn’t even the biggest surprise of the night!

Dean Brennan’s braves won’t care about that - they just want to shoot down Aldershot Town in front of the BT Sport cameras and keep upwardly mobile.

But with just one home win this season, the Bees need to do the business against the second-from-bottom side.

It hasn’t yet gone to plan for Mark Molesley since returning to Hampshire and after four straight defeats the team need a performance in front of the BT cameras.

Barnet won this fixture 3-1 at the Hive back in April and Aldershot fans know a frightful repeat performance will be ghoulish on Halloween weekend.

Grimsby Town v Notts County

It’s best seen as a compliment to Grimsby fans that their defeat to Wealdstone on Tuesday was possibly the biggest shock so far this season.

Heading into the new campaign, few Mariners knew what to expect after five years away.

So far, so very good. Their lead may have been cut to one point but a strong reaction against Notts County would underline their staying power.

But this isn’t the Magpies that started the month in a flap.

A seven-point return from three games signals their improvement and their confidence is back. They will fire off a statement of their own with victory.

It’s certain to be another eventful weekend!
