Not so Grim?

When it comes to the National League there’s generally one unwritten rule most relegated clubs have to quickly come to terms with.

What goes down very rarely comes straight back up.

Many try, most fail. In fact only two club have managed it in the past 25 years.

Grimsby Town are one game away from an instant EFL return. Not bad for a club who had to negotiate two tough away play-off games after finishing sixth.

So can they pull it off and be back playing League Two football a year after they crashed landed back in the National League after five years away?

Hurst has history

He’s the manager who took the club into the Football League in 2016 - and the man at the helm when they returned in 2021.

It’s fair to say Paul Hurst and Grimsby have history.

He said even “boring Paul” couldn’t hold it together after his team edged the helter-skelter semi final at Wrexham as the world watched.

Whatever happens, the Blundell Park boss says, the club says they must be proud of their reaction after relegation.

But don’t be fooled by those words - they are absolutely determined to finish the job on Sunday.

Meeting the Moors

Grimsby fans look away now - you haven’t enjoyed these comings together this season one bit.

Two late, late goals stunned Town at home in March after Harry Clifton’s opener offered little evidence of the heartache ahead.

Then in Birmingham, Joe Sbarra and Adam Rooney goals proved to be the difference.

Third time lucky?

The Final thoughts…

If you believe these things are written in the stars, you may want to get your money on the Mariners.

Dead and buried at Notts County with seconds to go? They went and won it.

Twice behind at Wrexham? The Hollywood script was thrown in the bin. How about another winner in the dying embers of extra time!

But they will know they face a team with just one defeat since early January - and that was harsh late on at champions-in-waiting Stockport County.

They will have sensational backing at the London Stadium, and that could help push them over the line.

What a final it’s going to be!

Where next?

Alex Hoping Life’s Gud For The Moors This Time Around Alex Gudger has already suffered play-off heartache with Solihull Moors and he isn’t too keen to have another summer moping around.
Gav Ready To Grab A Rare Double Promotion Chance Gavan Holohan says a big reason why he returned to the National League late in the season was to do a double.
