Unibet's National League North And South Preview

By Sam Elliott

If the Vanarama National League North and South table toppers are to be reeled in, it’s getting close to being now or never.

With just a few weeks let, Gateshead and Maidstone United both hold four-point advantages.

Both just need three more wins to seal the deal but there’s other battles to be won too - the play-offs and the relegation places are nowhere near decided. Here’s Saturday’s key games in both divisions.

Welling United vs Havant & Waterlooville - Vanarama National League South

This one is huge at both ends of the table with Welling sweating on survival and Havant having one hand on the final play-off spot up for grabs.

It’s the Wings vs Billericay in the relegation scramble and they have a one-point advantage - but their relegation rivals have just changed their manager and host Bath City.

Welling’s stunning three-goal comeback at Eastbourne showed they are capable against sides going for promotion but they were easily swatted aside by Dorking last time out.

The Hawks will need to be better away from home if they do clinch seventh place. It’s just one win in nine on the road and Paul Doswell knows they need to start getting it right on their travels.

Kettering Town vs Gateshead - Vanarama National League North

The countdown is on for Gateshead - but they begin the hunt for the three wins they need at a very demanding place.

Both these two are big surprise packages this season and Kettering have stunned many with their fantastic campaign.

Not only do they sit in the top seven with four games to go, but they have done it against the backdrop of manager Paul Cox leaving with just a few months remaining.

The Poppies have won four out of seven and their play-off destiny is in their own hands - but the problem is the seven sides below them are still in the mix for what they have hold of.

If they can defeat the leaders this weekend, few would argue they deserve the promotion place.

The Heed have won four of their last six away games and have recovered superbly from defeat at title rivals Brackley earlier this month.

They had a Bank Holiday weekend to remember, blitzing Guiseley and coming back from the dead to defeat Darlington.

With Brackley facing a trip to Darlo on Saturday, another great day for Gateshead could almost get the job done.

It should be another fantastic weekend!
