Two Successive Wins For Truro - Hungerford Claim First Success

By Steve Whitney

Truro City made it two wins from their opening two matches in the Vanarama National League South on Monday night with a comprehensive 3-0 success at Evesham against switched Gloucester City.

The White Tigers earned a late best-of-five-goals win against Welling United on Saturday, while the Tigers suffered a 2-0 defeat at Chelmsford City.

And it took only 7 minutes for Truro to go ahead on Monday when Ed Palmer fired home direct from a free-kick 20 yards from goal.

The visitors were then forced to soak up some pressure from Gloucester, playing their first game at their new `home`.

Joe Hanks came closest to equalising, but his effort was just wide.

However, it was the Cornish outfit who scored the next goal, 4 minutes before the break, courtesy of a Ben Gerring header.

Twelve minutes into the second half, the home side were offered a way back into the match when they were awarded a penalty after a handball in the area.

But Truro `keeper Tom McHale saved Ethan Moore`s spot-kick.

And with 15 minutes remaining, Truro made the game safe when Jordan Copp made it 3-0 after catching the home side on the break.

Monday`s other game in the division saw both Hungerford Town and Weston-super-Mare looking for their first win as they met at Bulpit Lane.

The hosts shared a goalless draw at fancied Dartford on the opening day, while the Seagulls were beaten at home by Poole Town.

The home side came out of the blocks quickly and Frenchman Stephane Ngamvoulou had the first attempt on goal in the 3rd minute which forced a save from Weston `keeper Luke Purnell.

Louis Soares crossed for Luke Williams to head narrowly wide and the Crusaders had an own goal disallowed for offside.

The hosts dominated the opening 20 minutes, but Weston`s Jarrad Welch had their first real attempt shortly afterwards.

Hungerford`s Stefan Brown was causing Weston problems and came close to breaking the deadlock on more than one occasion.

And then in first half injury-time, the hosts did manage to take the lead – and a terrific effort it was too as Callum Willmoth fired past a stunned Purnell from fully 30 yards.

The home fans didn`t have long to wait for a second goal when a superb Luke Williams free-kick from the right gave Purnell no chance.

Purnell prevented Williams from doubling his tally with another free-kick 20 minutes from time, and although Weston hit the bar late on, they never really threatened to overhaul the Crusaders` lead.
