Tuesday`s Win Put Right Two Wrongs For Woking

The young Cards keeper produced a fine penalty save in the 2-1 win at the Laithwaite Community Stadium on Tuesday night.

And whilst the trips to Tranmere and Barrow AFC produced little to shout about from a Cards point of view, Baxter says it was important to get three points back in front of their home fans.

“Obviously the results were disappointing, especially for the fans who went all that way,” said the 18-year old Chelsea loanee after the game. “We definitely wanted to put that right tonight, and whilst the disappointment is still there, the result goes some way to putting it right.

“Anthony Limbrick said before the game that he wants to make our home a fortress this season, and after looking good against Gateshead, and we again dug deep and did really well.”

After spending large parts of the first half in their own half, the Cards broke the deadlock against the run of play just before the break, as Jamie Philpot pulled the ball back to Inih Effiong, who turned away from his man before firing the hosts in front.

The Cards were fast out the blocks in the second half, and got the second goal their efforts deserved when Effiong did well on the right before firing the ball across the face of goal. With Bobson Bawling waiting to tap in his first goal in Cards colours, Callum Howe turned it into his own net in his attempts to clear it.

However, Baxter was then Woking’s hero after handball was given against Chez Isaac inside the penalty area following a scramble.

Ben Williamson, who has started the season in good form in front of goal, stepped up but Baxter made a solid save low to his left to keep the Spitfires at bay.

Despite that, Eastleigh were awarded a second penalty just moments later - with sub Ayo Obileye making no mistake on that occasion.

“I played Eastleigh last season when I was at Solihull, they had a younger team and tonight they were a different proposition entirely,” added Baxter. “They are a good side, who have a lot of Football League experience in their squad and were unbeaten before tonight.

“I felt we stood up to the physical test they posed in the first half, and once we dealt with that we played some great football and in the second half that helped us get a foothold on the game”.
