Tuesday`s Round-Up - Vanarama National League North

By Steve Whitney

Harrogate Town, Southport, Brackley Town and newly-promoted Spennymoor Town all possess 100 per cent records from the opening two matches of the Vanarama National League North season.

Tuesday night saw Harrogate win at relegated North Ferriby United, Brackley triumph at AFC Telford United and Spennymoor edge out FC United of Manchester.

Southport had beaten Bradford Park Avenue 24 hours earlier to make it two successive wins for them.

Harrogate earned a hard-fought three points in the first Yorkshire derby of the season with a 2-0 success at Grange Lane against relegated North Ferriby United.

Harrogate broke the deadlock on the hour-mark when Simon Ainge converted from the penalty spot.

The visitors made the points secure on 64 minutes when Joe Leesley powered home to leave the Villagers point-less from their first two matches back in the National League North.

Brackley, who enjoyed a good 2016/17 campaign, have started the new one off well with a second successive victory, this time at the New Bucks Head against AFC Telford United, who had also won last Saturday at York City.

Two goals within a minute around the half-hour mark, courtesy of Andy Brown and a Jordan Gough own goal gave the Saints a half-time advantage.

Lee Ndlovu made it three just 2 minutes after the break and the hosts pulled one back, an Ellis Myles own goal on 66 minutes.

Glen Taylor’s second half header earned newly-promoted Spennymoor their second straight victory at FC United of Manchester.

Moors led through Kallum Griffiths after 14 minutes and Andrew Johnson on 28 minutes.

But a Jason Gilchrist header on 36 minutes and a fine effort from Daniel Wisdom 7 minutes into the second half brought the home side level.

However, Taylor decided the contest just after the hour-mark when he headed home Matt Dixon’s corner.

Blyth Spartans, who came up with Moors, lost their first home game of the season after an impressive York City side ran out 2-0 winners in front of a good Croft Park crowd on 1,373.

Jon Parkin gave the Minstermen the lead after 15 minutes.

Sean Newton doubled that advantage just 7 minutes later to leave the hosts point-less after their opening two games back at this level.

Kidderminster Harriers are the other side yet to pick up a point after two games – Gainsborough Trinity play at Darlington FC tonight looking for their first points – losing late on at Liberty Way against Nuneaton Town.

Ashley Chambers’ winner 2 minutes into stoppage time eventually sealed Boro`s win and first points of 2017/18.

Salford City also recorded their first win, despite finishing the game at Chorley`s Victory Park with only nine men on the pitch.

Michael Nottingham’s 36th minute goal still separated the two sides when the Ammies had Josh Askew dismissed with 13 minutes remaining following a late challenge on Andy Teague.

Then, in the last minute of the 90, Danny Livesey had to hobble off with an ankle injury with all substitutes having already been used.

But they managed to hold on for three precious points.

Boston United are also off the mark with a 2-1 success against an Alfreton Town side buoyed by their opening day victory.

Mason Warren handed the Pilgrims a 16th minute lead at The Jakemans Stadium and, despite Craig Westcarr equalising 5 minutes later, United led at half-time, courtesy of Jordan Keane's first goal for the club.

Gregg Smith added a diving header on 77 minutes to seal victory for Adam Murray's side.

Tamworth followed suit by claiming all three points at the New Windmill Ground against a Leamington side who had won their opener last weekend.

Leamington were left to rue missed opportunities as they slipped to defeat in their opening home fixture since being prmoted.

Andy Burns put the Lambs in front after just 4 minutes, but Junior English pulled the Brakes back on terms 20 minutes later.

However, Aman Verma ensured the visitors earned their first points of the campaign with a second goal 17 minutes from the end.

And Stockport County also achieved success at the second time of asking, beating a Curzon Ashton side who had won their first match.

An Edgeley Park crowd of just over 3,000 saw Harry Winter give the home side a 21st minute lead.

Three minutes after the break, County doubled their advantage through Matty Warburton and Jason Oswell ensured local bragging rights when he added a third in the 55th minute.
