Tuesday Night Preview: Vanarama National League

By Sam Elliott

Big tests await the teams at the top of the table as Tuesday night’s Vanarama National League programme swings into action.

The promotion aspirations of many come under scrutiny - with two of the top four going head to head.

That game comes at the Crabble as Dover Athletic, in second place, await Woking - still reeling from Saturday’s limp defeat at Bromley.

Chris Kinnear, the Whites manager, knows the Cards are one of the surprise packages of the season so far but won’t want to see points on home turf slip through their grasp.

We may well know more about league leaders Macclesfield Town come 10pm tonight.

They travel to John Still’s Dagenham & Redbridge, who know they need to start climbing back up the table after their recent slide.

Without a goal in their last four games, the Daggers’ veteran manager has called for his team to find their shooting boots again as Macc return to East London for the second time in four days.

Wrexham are making a return of their own and having just gone to AFC Fylde in the FA Cup, they are back in the very north west looking for the three points that could take them top of the table.

It promises to be an interesting game at the EBB Stadium too as Aldershot and Sutton United - two sides who have already spent a few weeks at the top of the table this season - go looking for the win that will put the pressure back on.

Sutton manager Paul Doswell says he has a lot of respect for Gary Waddock but he is looking to make a statement in Hampshire.

Eastleigh play Solihull Moors at the Silverlake Stadium and Moors boss Richard Money says they need to start getting results and soon having slipped to the bottom of the table for the first time at the weekend.

Just above them are Torquay United and ahead of the Gulls’ game at Ebbsfleet, head coach Gary Owers said: “It’s another long away trip and a very difficult one.”

Fleet, with victory, could find themselves in the top seven for the first time this season after hitting form at the right time.

Guiseley’s vital success over Solihull on Saturday has given Paul Cox and his squad a “massive boost” he says - and now his former club are getting concerned.

The manager knows the Lions home form is crucial and a positive result at home to Boreham Wood could lift the club out of the relegation places.

Barrow will be watching on nervously and without a manager, they will still think they can get something from a trip to Chester with the Blues home form again shaky.

Leyton Orient’s form has gone past that. Without a league victory since beating Guiseley on the second day of September, Steve Davis will hope his public criticism of his players at the weekend works. The O’s are at home to Gateshead, another side who need the points.

So do Tranmere Rovers after Saturday’s poor second half against Aldershot. A trip to Hartlepool is hardly the ideal fixture to get back on track..

Bromley’s win over Woking was fully justified according to their manager Neil Smith. But they must grind it out against Maidenhead United at Hayes Lane, with the Magpies already taking four points on 3G so far this season.

It was opportunity missed for FC Halifax against bottom markers Torquay United at the weekend but manager Billy Heath is pleased they have an automatic shot at redemption - Maidstone United hope this long trip is more worthwhile than their doomed journey to AFC Fylde.
