Tranmere's Nine Men 'Showed Grit And Showed Character'

Micky Mellon couldn't fault his players after this afternoon's 0-0 draw at Torquay United.

On paper in seems possibly two points dropped for a team looking to win the Vanarama National League.

But playing with ten men once defender Steve McNulty was red carded just after half time, the travelling Rovers players were up against it. James Norwood was also told to leave the field five minutes from time.

The Prenton Park boss, though, was delighted to take home a point all things considered.

"We have to be happy," said Mellon after the goalless draw in Devon earlier today.

"We battled, we had to. This is a very difficult place to come and we showed we have bottle. We were gritty."

He added: "We had to show character after losing a man for so long. Circumstances dictate sometimes.

"I was pleased with the players because, a player short, you can always lose a match.

"We didn't and that's the main thing I will take away from this. They are good at home in the past few years but we showed we aren't going to be easy for anyone to play against."

Tranmere now have two home games in a row looking to collect their first three points.

"We play Woking on Tuesday and then it's Sutton United and we need to again make it difficult for teams to come to us and play," Mellon stated.

"The fans are going to be vital this season but we did them proud here today."
