Tranmere Boss Accepts Shots Deserved Late Winner

It’s not often managers see eye to eye when a late winning goal is involved as emotions run high, but it appears Aldershot boss Gary Waddock and Tranmere counterpart Micky Mellon were in agreement yesterday.

Scott Rendell’s late, late winner earned three points for the Shots and brought to an end Rovers’ good recent run of form.

Waddock’s side are back into the Vanarama National League play-off places and it seems Mellon was also of the impression the hosts were worthy of the dramatic win.

“I think we deserved it,” the manager said to Shots TV after the pulsating game at the EBB Stadium. “Tranmere Rovers’ management team said some very nice words after the game and they said we deserved it.

“They showed us a lot of respect and they are a good side, but what a comeback.

“In the second half Tranmere changed their formation, but we adapted to that. We made our changes to try and hurt them and that’s what we did - we came away with a fantastic three points.”

Waddock knows his side must lose the tag of a 45 minute team but he confessed he thought the winner was always coming.

“We weren’t great in the first half and gave away a goal I wasn’t pleased with the goal they scored but I’m always a big believer in playing right until the end,” he said.

“That’s what we did. I could see us scoring, and with the crowd noise level going up I could see ya getting the second goal too.”
