Town's Langmead Is Wembley Dreaming All Over Again!

If Harrogate Town are looking for a wise head should they reach the Wembley arch, they need look no further than Kelvin Langmead.

The 34-year-old Town defender has been there and done it all already at the home of football, gracing the hallowed turf twice in his career to date, tasting the grave lows with Shrewsbury Town before experiencing the highs with Peterborough United, although that particular play-off final was held at Old Trafford.

And with his current employers sitting sixth in the National League ahead of their BT Sport clash with Salford City on Wednesday night, he’s hoping a third visit to the capital might prove the best yet.

“Without a doubt, winning at Wembley with Harrogate would be right up there,” he said. “I think any promotion at any stage in your career at any level is a great achievement.

“I won the play-offs with Peterborough and it’s a fantastic occasion that’s great to be involved in - the whole thing is incredible.

“To avenge the Shrewsbury defeats is one way I’m looking at it of course, it’s one of those things I look back on over my career with the what ifs.

“But it was a separate time in my career, so I have to separate it a little bit otherwise I’d end up putting too much pressure on it.
“I don’t want to dwell on the past but obviously, it would be fantastic for Harrogate to go one further.”

Langmead arrived at Harrogate a seasoned defender to boost Simon Weaver’s side after an incredible title-winning season the year before.

But the former, Peterborough, Northampton and Ebbsfleet man hasn’t always played so deep.

“I started as a striker, that is true,” Langmead said. “When I was younger, as you do, I always played upfront. I used to play in midfield too for my school and we always did well in the competitions, and I got spotted by Preston North End as a striker when I was 15.

“After a spell there I moved onto Shrewsbury Town and we had a few injuries and the manager said we were pretty desperate and said he would give me a chance at centre-half in a reserve game to see how I got on.

“I ended up playing that game and then playing the rest of the season at centre-half. I’ve wandered back up top the odd time in my career but it’s a very rare occasion!

“It all happened so quickly, and I rode the wave of it to be honest,” he continued. “Things went well and there wasn’t really any pressure on me, I enjoyed the experience and stayed there ever since.”
