Torquay Ready For Maidstone Challenge

By David Richardson

Torquay United manager Gary Owers has done his homework ahead of their home match against Maidstone United.

The visitors are coming off the back of a 4-2 win over League Two side Cheltenham Town in the first round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Torquay weren’t in cup action last week so Owers has had two weeks to prepare his team. “We’ve just worked hard,” he said.

“You always try and focus on the game at the end of the week and that was missing. We went down another root.

“We got stuck into some really tough physical sessions and I think the players come through that really well.”

On Maidstone’s win at Cheltenham, Owers added: “I went to the game and they deserved to win.

“They were very good on the day. They scored at the right times and they were really positive in their play. They went for the win and they got their reward because they scored four goals. Cheltenham came out second half and got an early goal to make it 3-1 and you think “this’ll be interesting” and they went up the other end and scored straight away and it was game over.

“They’re a good attacking team – good at set plays. I think they’ll come here in confident mood after that win. We’ll have to have our wits about us. We’ll have to have a scrap with them at some point if we are going to get the points.”
