This season a number of teams from our leagues will aim to progress to the next round, last season at this stage that was the same aim, some made it and some didn't but all the teams listed took a lot of credit for how they played, writes Tom Feaheny.
Curzon Ashton 3 AFC Wimbledon 4 (04/12/2016)
Vanarama National League North side Curzon Ashton so nearly completed a cup shock as they went 3-0 up against the League One opposition, as striker Adam Morgan completed a memorable hat-trick. It wasn't to be though as three goals in as many minutes from Tom Elliott, Dominic Poleon and Tyrone Barnett brought the scores level and in added time Elliott headed in his second. This fine performance by Ashton got them plenty of plaudits as the Dons would go onto lose to Sutton United in the next round.
Lincoln City 3 Oldham Athletic 2 (05/12/2016)
We had to mention Lincoln City after the fine run they went on last season while in the Vanarama National League, while their journey started by beating Guiseley in the fourth qualifying round, this was the game where they showed what they could do against league opponents. Two Theo Robinson goals in between a Terry Hawkridge strike gave the Imps what looked to be an easy victory with 47 minutes on the clock. Peter Clarke and Billy McKay goals put pressure on Danny Cowley's side but they held on and in front of 7,000 fans celebrated going through to the third round where they would knock out Championship side Ipswich Town.
Blackpool 1 Brackley Town 0 (03/12/2016)
While Vanarama National League North side Brackley exited the competition at this stage, they put up a real fight and could have forced a replay. Kevin Wilkin's side fell behind early on with Jamille Matt scoring after 6 minutes, Town though who had beaten league opponents the round before against Gillingham, had some good chances with Clark Robertson nearly scoring an own goal and Lee Ndlovu's deflected effort going narrowly wide of goal. Blackpool held on and would defeat Barnsley at Oakwell in a replay in the third round.
Bristol Rovers 1 Barrow 2 (04/12/2016)
Byron Harrison was the hero for Paul Cox's Barrow as they progressed to the third round of the cup competition. At the start it looked like League One side Bristol Rovers may have enjoyed this game after taking the lead with just ten minutes gone with Rory Gaffney scoring a tap-in, Harrison though had other ideas and made it one all moments later with a calm finish and with an hour gone he was in the right place to score and send the away fans wild. The bluebirds would take on Rochdale in the next round where they lost 2-0.
Eastleigh 3 FC Halifax Town 3 (04/12/2016)
This was a match that had it all, late goals, a potential cup upset and a new manager in the dugout. Eastleigh's Martin Allen had his first game in charge for this match and if it wasn't for Mikael Mandron 90th minute strike then Vanarama National League North FC Halifax Town would have claimed victory, an early Mandron strike was cancelled out by Jordan Sinnott, Scott Garner and Richard Peniket giving the Shaymen the lead before Scott Wilson halved the deficit. A replay would see the higher opponents win 2-0 at The Shay. These two sides are now in the same division with the Shaymen tasting play-off joy while Eastleigh lost in the next round to Brentford 5-1.
