The Shots’ third win on the bounce came thanks to an energetic display in the opening 45 minutes which “had everything” according to the manager.
The points were secured when Bernard Mensah grabbed the equaliser before Shamir Fenelon was in the right place at the right time to tap in after Adam McDonnell’s shot rocked the underside of the crossbar and fell into his path.
Aldershot will take over the leadership of the league if they win at Bromley in midweek.
Waddock said his players are doing exactly what he asked of them.
The manager said: “In the fast half I thought we were very good. Our movement and our energy to close the ball down was of top quality.
“I’m being critical here, but second half I don’t think we passed the ball as well as we did in the first half.
“But we were solid and we restricted them, and we kept our energy levels really high.
“What we have done is shown both sides to our game. But three points against the league leaders? It’s a very good afternoon for us.”
Quizzed on just how good his side were in the first 45 minutes as the EBB Stadium, Waddock was quick to rate it.
“I would say that has got to be the best performance of the season so far,” added the manager.
“I say that because it had just about everything you want to see from your side.
“We caused Wrexham a lot of problems and our second goal, the build up play to it was fantastic.
“The work rate was outstanding and it could be an important win come the end of the season when we look back at it.”
