Some 41 hit the back of the net on opening weekend, an average of nearly three-and-a-half goals game.
The forecast is for more thrillers. Let’s take a look at what’s in front of us as the summer sun returns with the August rain finally relenting.
Casting aside their torturous summer, Southend United handed out a lesson to one of the title tips last week.
They now travel in numbers to Dagenham & Redbridge in a game that always carries extra spice and manager Kevin Maher said: “We’re pleased with the performance and result last week but that was put to bed pretty quickly and we’ve got to focus on the game ahead.”
They thrashed Oldham of course, who need to repair that damage against Aldershot Town but face a side with confidence flowing through them - they hit Oxford City for five and the Latics know they can’t afford a repeat of their Roots Hall defensive horror show.
York City’s transfer business has also seen them tipped for a top seven push but defeat at Wealdstone wasn’t the start they wanted. They try again at home to Kidderminster Harriers while the Stones are at Eastleigh.
Chesterfield showed the good and the bad side to their game as they squeezed past Dorking 4-3. A trip to AFC Fylde requires an more rounded display.
Oxford City and Rochdale didn’t have an opening day to remember but can get going when the lock horns. The all North East game sees Hartlepool United host Gateshead.
There is of course a live TNT Sports match and Barnet, who beat the Pools 3-2 last weekend, are at Bromley. Both made the play-offs last season.
Ebbsfleet United awoke after a “nervous” start at Rochdale in the broadcaster’s first game and can make it two wins from two at home to Solihull, who showed spirit against Eastleigh with ten men.
Dorking meet Maidenhead United, Boreham Wood can build on their comeback against Gateshead by beating strong starters FC Halifax while Woking welcome Altrincham after both teams drew on day one.
