The National League Title Race: All The Runners And Riders!

By Tom Scott

With the two-month countdown underway, the National League title race is perfectly poised to go right to the wire ahead of the season finale on April 27.

The seventh different leader of the season so far, Wrexham currently sit top of the pile. But with several sides breathing down their necks, we’re taking a look at the run-ins of all the title challengers.

Wrexham (66 points)

Leyton Orient (A)
Barrow AFC (H)
Maidstone United (H)
Hartlepool United (A)
Ebbsfleet United (A)
Braintree Town (H)
Barnet (A)
Sutton United (H)
FC Halifax Town (A)
Harrogate Town (H)

Bryan Hughes’ men kick-off their run-in with a crunch trip to Leyton Orient. With just five point separating the pair, a win is a must for the Dragons. The Racecourse will no doubt be rocking for clashes with Barrow and Maidstone before the leaders take to the road for games against Hartlepool and Ebbsfleet. Home games against Braintree and Sutton fall either side of a trip to Barnet. After a final away day in Halifax, Hughes and his squad return home for their last outing of the season against Harrogate Town.

Solihull Moors (64 points)

Salford City (A)
Gateshead (H)
Braintree Town (H)
FC Halifax Town (A)
Dover Athletic (H)
Hartlepool United (A)
Havant & Waterlooville (H)
Bromley (A)
Leyton Orient (H)
Dagenham & Redbridge (A)

The Moors are in with a huge shout of the title after flirting with relegation last season. Tim Flowers’ side kick-off their final ten games with a trip to Salford City before entertaining Gateshead at home. Strugglers Dover, Braintree and Havant & Waterlooville all face a daunting trip to the ATG Stadium in between trips to Halifax, Hartlepool and Bromley. A potentially crucial showdown with Leyton Orient is their penultimate game before a final away day at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Leyton Orient (61 points)

Wrexham (H)
Aldershot (A)
Bromley (A)
Eastleigh (H)
AFC Fylde (H)
Barnet (A)
FC Halifax Town (H)
Sutton United (A)
Harrogate Town (H)
Solihull Moors (A)
Braintree Town (H)

If Leyton Orient are going to win the ultimate prize, they’re going to have to do it the hard way. Justin Edinburgh’s men face all but one of the top seven sides between now and the final day. The good news is that Wrexham, Eastleigh, AFC Fylde and Harrogate Town all have to travel to the capital to face the O’s on their home soil before a trip to Solihull Moors. In between those games, trips to Aldershot, Bromley, Barnet and Sutton United also beckon before a final day home showing against Braintree.

AFC Fylde (60 points)

Hartlepool United (H)
Dagenham & Redbridge (H)
Gateshead (A)
Leyton Orient (A)
Aldershot (A)
Eastleigh (H)
Braintree Town (A)
Barnet (H)
Salford City (A)
FC Halifax Town (H)

Games against fellow challengers Leyton Orient, Eastleigh and Salford could make or break the title dreams of Dave Challinor’s side. Home games against Hartlepool and Dagenham & Redbridge present an opportunity to get their final ten games off to a good start. The Coasters will be on their travels to Aldershot and Braintree are up before Barnet come to Mill Farm - Halifax are also in Lancashire for the final day clash.

Eastleigh (58 points)

Maidstone United (H)
Barrow AFC (H)
Leyton Orient (A)
Hartlepool United (H)
Barnet (H)
AFC Fylde (A)
Gateshead (H)
Dagenham & Redbridge (A)
Maidenhead United (H)
Boreham Wood (A)

While many might not give Eastleigh a say in the hunt for the title, six wins in their last seven outings proves they have what it takes. The Spitfires are at the Silverlake for six of their final ten games which could make all the difference. Maidstone, Barrow, Hartlepool and Barnet all travel to Hampshire, a trip to Leyton Orient lies between them. A showdown with AFC Fylde could be a fine opportunity to gain ground before games against Gateshead, Dagenham & Redbridge and Maidenhead with their season ending at Boreham Wood.

Salford City (57 points)

Solihull Moors (H)
Aldershot (A)
Barnet (H)
Harrogate Town (A)
Bromley (H)
Maidstone United (A)
Maidenhead United (H)
Boreham Wood (A)
AFC Fylde (H)
Hartlepool United (A)

Many people’s tip for the title at the beginning of the season, Graham Alexander’s men haven’t had it all their own way. Hosting Solihull Moors is a perfect chance to show they mean business, before clashes with Aldershot, Barnet and Harrogate Town. Their season comes to an end with a trip to Hartlepool. That’s after a huge clash with AFC Fylde at The Peninsula – which also plays host to games with Bromley and Maidenhead. The Ammies will be on their travels to strugglers Maidstone before facing Boreham Wood.
