The ‘Mentally Injured’ Chesterfield Players Getting Closer

Martin Allen feels Chesterfield are edging towards that elusive win which will spark their season into life.

But he said even though they didn’t get it at Maidstone United on Saturday the performance demonstrated that they are heading in the right direction.

The Spireites haven’t won since the third game of the season and lost eight of their previous ten games.

The 1-1 draw was something to build on said the manager who told the club’s official website that they were excellent in Kent.

“I thought they showed great guts, great character. It was a young team. We had certain players playing out of position because we didn’t have anyone else,” he said.

“We’ve picked up a few injuries over the last couple of weeks, physical injuries. We’ve got a whole group that are mentally injured.

“Today I thought they came out and really put in a good hardworking performance. It wasn’t always pretty but we played to our strengths.”

He added: “I think they had one shot in the first half. We must have had ten, twelve opportunities to score.

“It’s better to have that than none. There have been games where we haven’t had anything.

“At half-time, we were scratching our heads and thinking ‘how the hell are we not leading this game and not winning this game quite comfortably?’

“The game should have been out the way, but the player put in a great effort. They showed great commitment, and in the second half when it went 1-1 we defended very well.”
